Press release

From the beginning of April, sanctions on EU level prohibited companies located in Russia and Belarus from carrying commercial goods by road into the EU. An exception to this has been the return of empty containers, trailers and flatbed trailers, which still could be brought to Finland with a tractor registered in Russia. This exceptional procedure ends on 31 May 2022.

The sanctions by the European Union against Russia and Belarus stopped all commercial road traffic from Russia from 9 April 2022. After that time, Finnish Customs has as the implementing authority, turned back all commercial goods transports arriving from Russia or Belarus in vehicles registered in those countries.

However, it has still been possible to return empty containers, trailers and flatbed trailers to the EU territory with a tractor registered in Russia or Belarus. This exceptional procedure ends on 31 May 2022. The purpose of the exceptional procedure has been to facilitate the situation particularly for companies based in Finnish ports, where a considerable number of containers used in maritime traffic have been left in Russia since the transport ban was imposed.

Customs customer notice (8 April 2022): Commercial road traffic from Russia to end after midnight for vehicles registered in Russia or Belarus
