Processing of personal data at the Customs Laboratory

Purpose of the processing of personal data

Personal data are processed at the Customs Laboratory in different tasks, namely: 

  • Customs’ control examinations of consumer goods, foodstuffs, fuels and taxation 
  • controls of products falling under the scope of the Act on the Organisation of the Markets in Agricultural Products, and phytosanitary controls on commercial imports
  • the sampling function
  • examinations carried out on behalf of other authorities

In addition, personal data are processed in the systems of the Customs Laboratory in the tasks of the Customs’ Product Safety Unit, namely

  • official tasks related to product safety controls
  • decisions and related measures based on the Food Act, Consumer Safety Act, the Act on Cosmetic Products and the Chemicals Act.

The personal data are processed by personnel of the Customs Laboratory and the Product Safety Unit according to their user rights. 

Categories of personal data

  • The following personal data relating to Customs’ control examinations, controls, audits, assigned examinations and sampling are recorded or may be recorded at the Customs Laboratory: data on businesses, authorities and their personnel (first and last name, work email address, work telephone number), address of the business, and Business ID as provided by the operator
  • data on individuals: first and last name, vehicle registration number

At the Customs Laboratory, the following personal data used in in the monitoring of persons accessing the Laboratory premises are recorded:

  • First and last name and company of the person arriving at the Customs Laboratory

Sources of personal data

The personal data are obtained from Customs’ different units/departments, from authorities, from businesses or from the persons themselves.

Regular disclosures of personal data

Personal data can be transferred to other functions within Customs for the performance of official tasks. Personal data are disclosed to the Finnish Food Authority and the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency in accordance with legislation and official tasks. The data of businesses are disclosed to them as agreed. 

Time limits for storage and deletion of personal data

Personal data collected through the tasks of the Customs Laboratory are stored at the Customs Laboratory for no longer than required under statutory obligations and agreed in the assignments.

If the statutory basis for storing personal data has ended, the data are deleted in accordance with Customs’ normal practice based on an annual review.
