Press release

The Economic Crime Investigation Unit of Finnish Customs has completed the preliminary enquiry regarding the ship Eagle S. The purpose of the preliminary enquiry was to establish whether there is reason to suspect the crew of the ship Eagle S of having committed an aggravated regulation offence by bringing fuel to Finnish territorial waters. According to what has been established by Finnish Customs, the unleaded petrol and diesel carried by the ship are classified as products subject to the sanctions against Russia.

The interviews carried out during the preliminary enquiry show that the ship had entered Finnish territorial waters at the request of Finnish authorities, so the crew cannot be considered to have intentionally brought the fuels to Finnish territorial waters, thereby violating the sanctions legislation. Due to this, the Economic Crime Investigation Unit of Finnish Customs will not start a criminal investigation in the matter. The Deputy Prosecutor General has also been consulted in the matter.

Customs’ administrative enquiry actions relating to the matter continue. The cargo of the ship will remain detained by Finnish Customs for the time being.
