Be sure to declare the correct mode of transport on the EU border

Publication date 16.3.2021 10.00
Press release

Customs has observed that modes of transport on the EU border have been declared incorrectly especially as concerns UK trade.

In customs declarations, the active means of transport in which transports cross the external EU border are to be declared as the mode of transport. An active means of transport is one which propels an entire combination (for example, a ship if a lorry has been loaded onto a seagoing vessel, or a train if goods are transported through the Channel Tunnel). In UK imports and exports, the mode of transport at the border cannot be road transport when goods are taken from the EU directly to the United Kingdom (code 3 for mode of transport).

In the future, in cases where customs declarations combine the country code GB and code 3 for mode of transport, Customs will respond with an error notification and a request for checking the provided information.
