Extensive series of narcotics offences in Hämeenlinna – the darker side of the internet gave no shelter
In early 2025, Finnish Customs uncovered a criminal case consisting of several smaller acts in which a man residing in Kanta-Häme is suspected of an aggravated narcotics offence. The suspect is suspected of having sold narcotics and narcotic medicines in the Tor network.
In the first quarter of 2025, Finnish Customs seized several postal consignments containing narcotic medicines that had arrived in Hämeenlinna from abroad. The preliminary investigation found that the suspect was a 30-year-old man living in the region of Kanta-Häme. He was apprehended in March and remanded on suspicion of having committed an offence with probable cause.
The preliminary investigation was eventually broadened to concern the import, sale and distribution of a total of 46 narcotics consignments, as well as one smuggling offence and one count of unlawful use of narcotics over the years 2024 and 2025. The resident of Kanta-Häme is suspected of having ordered narcotic medicines and narcotics sent by letter from several European countries and of having sold and distributed the substances in Finland through a marketplace in the Tor network.
“The case we’ve instigated unfortunately shows, once again, how economic gain persuades people to engage in criminal activities perceived as requiring little effort. In the present case, the suspect did not have any notable criminal past involving narcotics in the authorities’ records before his activities were discovered. However, when engaging in these kinds of activities, the risk of being caught is high,” says the investigator in charge, Tuomas Korhonen.
Finnish Customs suspects that the sale of the narcotic medicines, narcotics and the medicine Ketamine generated a total economic gain of almost 28,000 euros. In addition, the value of the narcotic medicines seized by Finnish Customs would have amounted to about 19,000 euros based on the sales prices established in the preliminary investigation.
The case has been forwarded to the Prosecution District of Eastern Finland for consideration of charges in May 2025.
