Brexit transition period until the end of the year

Publication date 27.1.2020 9.33
Press release

Brexit, that is to say, the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, will happen at the end of January 2020. The transition period defined in the withdrawal agreement will start at the beginning of February and last until the end of the year 2020. Even though the UK is becoming a third country, during the transition period the current rules will continue to be in place as if the UK were still a member of the EU. This means that the free movement of goods between the UK and the EU will continue until the end of 2020, and that there will be no changes during this period to customs clearance or travelling to the UK.

During 2020, the EU and the UK will negotiate to establish new trade relations for after the transition period. At the moment there is no information on future trade relations or possible customs duties. Due to the tight negotiation schedule, some sectors may fall outside the scope of the agreement in the beginning of 2021. Businesses in particular should be prepared for this possibility.
