Description
International Trade Statistics describe the trade between Finland and other EU Member States and between Finland and Third Countries i.e. internal and external trade, by the size categories of enterprises.
Data content
These statistics indicate both the quarterly and annual values of import in and export from Finland according to the size categories of enterprises. The data have been summed up both according to industries and products by activities. Beside statistical data, the development of international trade by the size categories of enterprises is also analyzed in words and graphs.
Data collecting method
Data on the trade between Finland and other EU Member States are collected from the statistical declarations lodged by enterprises through the Intrastat system of internal trade. The information on the trade between Finland and Third Countries is obtained from customs declarations, which have to be lodged on every import and export consignment. The data on internal and external trade are combined to form the International Trade Statistics of Finland.
The data on the size categories of enterprises have been obtained from the material of the Statistics Finland. This material is extended annually to the disposal of the Statistics of the Finnish Customs on the basis of a cooperation agreement.
Applied classifications
The product classification applied in the statistics is the CPA product classification of the EU (Council Regulation, EEC, of 29 October 1993, No. 3969/93). The CPA classification describes the structure of export and import by product categories according to activities (Classification of Products by Activities CPA). Data complying with the CPA are deduced from the Combined Nomenclature CN.
The industries appearing in the statistics comply with the industry categories of the European Community (Nomenclature générale des Activités économiques dans les Communautés européennes NACE 2002). The NACE category title is chosen for an enterprise in accordance with its principal branch of industry.
The country classification is based on the Commission Regulation (EC, 1833/2006) on the nomenclature of countries and territories for the external trade of the Community and the internal trade between the Member States. The country codes comply with those of the ISO/DIS 3166 standard of the International Organization for Standardization.

Completion or publication date
This quarterly statistics is published not later than three months after the expiry of the quarter to which the statistics refer. The annual statistics is published not later than six months after the expiry of the statistical year. The publication timetable is maintained on the Internet site of the Finnish Customs.
