Both export volume and export prices rose in June

The value of Finnish exports increased by five per cent in June according to foreign trade statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was slightly over 4.9 billion euros. Export prices increased by 0.6 per cent and export volume by 5.2 per cent. In January-June exports diminished by five per cent.

The value of imports increased by three per cent in June and was slightly over 4.6 billion euros. Import prices decreased by 3.5 per cent while import volume increased by 8.6 per cent. In January-June, the total import value decreased by one per cent compared to the previous year.

The balance of trade showed a surplus of 299 million euros in June. In January-June, the balance of trade had a deficit of a billion euros. In June the previous year the trade surplus was 177 million euros, and in January-June the trade balance showed a surplus of 266 million euros. The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade improved in June because export prices grew and import prices fell. The point figure in June was 103.2, while it was 99.0 June the previous year. The terms of trade improved also from the previous month's point figure of 101.2.

Exports of electrical machinery and equipment, transport equipment and petroleum products improved compared to the previous year's June, while exports of industrial machinery, chemical industry products, forest industry products and metals declined. Imports of industrial machinery, electrical machinery and equipment, transport equipment and crude oil increased, while imports of chemical industry products and food items diminished.

Exports to EU member states increased by 15 per cent in June while exports to non-EU countries decreased by eight per cent. The most important export countries to rise in June were Germany, Sweden and France. Exports to the Netherlands, China and the United Kingdom decreased. Imports from EU-countries increased by three per cent and imports from non-EU countries also by three per cent in June. Imports from Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom decreased, while imports from Sweden, the United States, China and France increased.
