Export volume decreased while export prices grew in December
The value of Finnish exports of goods decreased by three per cent in December year-on-year according to foreign trade statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was almost 4,5 billion euros. Export prices increased by 4,9 per cent while export volume decreased by 7,6 per cent. In January-December exports diminished by four per cent.
The value of imports increased by two per cent in December and was almost five billion euros. Import prices increased by 7,6 per cent while import volume decreased by 3,8 per cent. In January-December the total import value remained at the level of the previous year.
The balance of trade showed a deficit of 509 million euros in December. In January-December the balance of trade had a deficit of 2,9 billion euros. In December the previous year the trade deficit was 262 million euros, and in January-December the trade balance showed a deficit of 613 million euros. The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade weakened in December because import prices grew more than export prices. The point figure in December was 99,1, while it was 101,7 December the previous year. The terms of trade weakened from the previous month's point figure of 99,7.
Exports of machinery and equipment and petroleum products improved compared to the previous year's December, while exports of transport equipment, forest industry products and metals declined. Imports of electrical machinery and equipment, crude oil and petroleum products and metals increased, while imports of industrial machinery, transport equipment and chemical industry products were down.
Exports to EU member states decreased by seven per cent in December while exports to non-EU countries increased by two per cent. The most important export countries to rise in December were Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States and China. Exports to Russia, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France decreased. Imports from EU-countries decreased by six per cent while imports from non-EU countries rose by 17 per cent in December. Imports from Germany, China, the United Kingdom and France decreased, while imports from Russia, Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States increased.
