Both export volume and export prices fell in February

The value of Finnish exports decreased by two per cent in February according to foreign trade statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was almost 4.1 billion euros. Export prices decreased by 1.8 per cent and export volume by 0.2 per cent. In January-February exports diminished by six per cent.

The value of imports decreased by five per cent in February and was 4.2 billion euros. Import prices decreased by 3.5 per cent and import volume by 0.3 per cent. In January-February, the total import value decreased by six per cent compared to the previous year.

The balance of trade showed a deficit of 138 million euros in February. In January-February, the balance of trade had a deficit of 534 million euros. In February the previous year the trade deficit was 278 million euros, and in January-February the trade balance showed a deficit of 580 million euros.

The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade improved in February because import prices fell more than export prices. The point figure in February was 103.4, while it was 101.6 February the previous year. The terms of trade also improved from the previous month's point figure of 102.2.

Exports of transport equipment and forest industry products improved compared to February of the previous year, while exports of petroleum products and metals declined. Imports of industrial machinery, transport equipment, food items and metals increased, while imports of electrical machinery and equipment, crude oil and petroleum products and chemical industry products diminished.

Exports to EU member states decreased by two per cent in February and exports to non-EU countries by three per cent. The most important export countries to rise in rise in February were Germany, China and the United Kingdom. Exports to Sweden, the Netherlands and the United States, decreased. Imports from EU-countries remained at the level of the previous year while imports from non-EU countries fell by 14 per cent in February. Imports from Sweden, the Netherlands and China decreased, while imports from Germany, the United States and the United Kingdom increased.
