In early summer, the Accreditation Service FINAS did a periodic audit of the Customs Laboratory operations. The auditors were Finnish and Swedish experts.

The audit showed that the technical operation of the Customs Laboratory has a high level of performance and is constantly being developed. It also showed that the staff is qualified and motivated and their competence is maintained with advanced training. The validation practices of the Laboratory procedures were found to be working well, and the Laboratory participated with great success in comparative tests in all fields.

Thanks to the results of the audit, the accredited qualification range of the Laboratory will be expanded regarding the identification of illicitly imported substances, foodstuff element analyses, microbiology, analyses of food enhancing substances as well as analyses of food contact materials.

In many areas, the Laboratory uses flexible scopes, which means that the Laboratory can expand its scope within a given limit, between the periodic visits by the auditors. After the last audit, the scope was expanded to include the analyses of   pesticide residues, narcotics analyses as well as examinations of allergens and genetic engineering.

The Customs Laboratory has around 80 accredited testing methods in the following areas: foodstuff sampling, microbiological and chemical testing of foodstuffs, mechanical and chemical testing of consumer goods, narcotics analytics, fuel analytics, genetic engineering and allergens.

According to the audit, the Customs Laboratory’s operation fulfils the requirements of standard SFS-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005.
