Fees for laboratory examinations

The laboratory examination fees are determined in accordance with the Ministry of Finance Decree on Customs performances subject to charge 1364/2016. This decree entered into force on 1 January 2017 and is valid until the end of 2018.

Laboratory examinations pertaining to customs control and initiated by Customs based on the Food Act 23/2006 and the Consumer Safety Act 920/2011, are subject to a fee as follows:

Goods under the scope of the food legislation

  • 440 euros/lot for 1–3 samples
  • 532 euros/lot for 4 samples or more
  • 250 euros/lot, when the value of the whole import lot is no higher than 1 500 euros

Goods under the scope of the consumer safety legislation

  • 360 euros/lot for 1–3 samples
  • 440 euros/lot for 4 samples or more
  • 200 euros/lot, when the value of the whole import lot is no higher than 1 500 euros

Examinations of food contact materials

In accordance with the Food Act, the Customs Laboratory examines food contact materials that Customs’ is responsible to control, i.e. materials that come into direct contact with food and are imported from third countries as well as intra-EU trade imports. The Customs Laboratory examines tableware made out of plastic, ceramic materials, glass and metal as well as kitchenware, packing materials, small appliances and silicone products among other things.

Food contact materials in childcare products are primarily products that are aimed to facilitate children's meals. Such products, e.g. baby bottles, beaker cups, plates and first spoons for small children, must fill the requirements for childcare products as well as for food contact materials.

The Customs Laboratory charges a fee for examining samples of food contact materials, in accordance with the decree on Finnish Customs’ fees, for the goods under the scope of the food legislation.
