Export volume decreased while export prices grew in January
The value of Finnish exports decreased by ten per cent in January according to foreign trade statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was almost 3.6 billion euros. Export prices increased by 1.8 per cent while export volume decreased by ten per cent.
The value of imports decreased by eight per cent in January and was 3.9 billion euros. Import prices increased by 1.8 per cent while import volume decreased by nine per cent.
The balance of trade showed a deficit of 357 million euros in January. In January the previous year the trade deficit was 301 million euros. The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade remained unchanged in January because import prices grew at the same rate as export prices. The point figure in January was 102.2. The terms of trade improved from the previous month's point figure of 101.7.
Exports of products of almost all main industries declined in January. The exports of electrical machinery and equipment remained at the level of the previous year. Imports of electrical machinery and equipment increased, while imports of all of other main categories of goods were down.
Exports to EU member states decreased by eight per cent in January and exports to non-EU countries by 12 per cent. The most important export country to rise in January was China. Exports to other important trading partners declined. Imports from EU-countries decreased by eight per cent, and imports from non-EU countries also by eight per cent in January. Imports from China increased, but decreased from other major import countries.
