Export volume decreased while export prices grew in April

The value of Finnish exports of goods increased by five per cent in April year-on-year according to international trade in goods statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was slightly over 4.5 billion euros. Export prices increased by 8.2 per cent while export volume decreased by 2.2 per cent. In January-April exports increased by 15 per cent.

The value of imports increased by six per cent in April and was 4.9 billion euros. Import prices increased by 6.9 per cent and import volume by 1.3 per cent. In January-April the total import value increased by 13 per cent compared to the previous year.

The balance of trade showed a deficit of 353 million euros in April. In January-April the balance of trade had a deficit of almost 1,1 billion euros. In April the previous year the trade deficit was 279 million euros, and in January-April the trade balance showed a deficit of 1,2 billion euros.

The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade improved in April because export prices grew more than import prices. The point figure in April was 101.9, while it was 100.6 April the previous year. The terms of trade also improved from the previous month's point figure of 101.8.

Exports of transport equipment, petroleum products, chemical industry products and metals improved compared to the previous year's April, while exports of machinery and equipment and forest industry products declined. Imports of electrical machinery and equipment, transport equipment, crude oil and petroleum products and metals increased, while imports of industrial machinery, chemical industry products and food items were down.  

Exports to EU member states increased by three per cent in April and exports to non-EU countries by seven per cent. The most important export countries to rise in April were Russia, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the United States, China and the United Kingdom. Exports to France decreased. Imports from EU-countries remained at the level of the previous year while imports from non-EU countries rose by 17 per cent in April. Imports from the Netherlands, the United States and the United Kingdom decreased, while imports from Russia, Germany, Sweden, China and France increased.
