Inspectors at the Customs Laboratory rejected eight containers, a total of around 160 tonnes, of Egyptian and Turkish oranges last month. The oranges were of Navel-variety and labelled Class 1.
The import of the rejected lots was prohibited, because the oranges did not fill the Class 1 requirements. Reasons for the rejections were that they were spoiled, were bruised or dirty, among other things. After an overhaul and a new inspection, a total of around 113 tonnes of oranges was subsequently given import approval.
- EU has laid down special quality requirements for oranges. These requirements must be filled during all stages of the trade, including the import.
- Oranges can be classified as Extra Class, Class 1 and Class 2. Class 1 is the most frequently used classification.
