Both export volume and export prices rose in March
The value of Finnish exports of goods increased by 21 per cent in March according to international trade statistics provided by Finnish Customs. The value of Finnish exports was 5.4 billion euros. Export prices increased by 7.4 per cent and export volume increased by 14.1 per cent. In January-March exports increased by 18 per cent.
The value of imports increased by 11 per cent in March and was almost 5.3 billion euros. Import prices increased by 8.2 per cent and import volume increased by 4.2 per cent. In January-March the total import value increased by 15 per cent compared to the previous year.
The balance of trade showed a surplus of 117 million euros in March. In January-March the balance of trade had a deficit of 624 million euros. In March the previous year the trade deficit was 291 million euros, and in January-March the trade balance showed a deficit of 914 million euros. The terms of trade for foreign trade are calculated based on the unit value index. Terms of trade show the ratio between export and import prices. The terms of trade weakened in March because import prices grew more than export prices. The point figure in March was 101.8, while it was 102.5 March the previous year. The terms of trade weakened from the previous month's point figure of 101.9.
The value of exports of all major commodity groups grew in March. The most significant increase was with machinery and transport equipment, metals and ore. The value of exports of oil products also rose sharply thanks to the rise in export prices. Imports of transport equipment declined, but the value of imports of other major groups increased.
Exports to both EU member states and to non-EU countries increased by 21 per cent in March. Exports to all major trading partners grew in March. Imports from EU-countries increased by five per cent and imports from non-EU countries by 21 per cent in March. Imports from the Netherlands, the United States and France decreased, while imports from Russia, Germany, Sweden, China and the United Kingdom increased.
