Customs and the Finnish Vehicle Administration carried out an intensified control on heavy vehicles in Hanko on Friday 5 August 2016. The control targeted heavy vehicles and their cargo units arriving from Paldiski in Estonia. A large number of serious faults were found regarding articulated vehicles.

Customs conducted controls on 10 articulated vehicles in total. Of these, every second vehicle was immediately immobilised and the drivers were given fines for endangering traffic safety and for vehicle violations. The vehicle violations consisted of serious cases of faulty brakes among other things. The brakes on one articulated vehicle had no power assist, which meant that the brakes did not lock at all. The vehicle in question was carrying 10 000 kilos of mortar.

Other vehicle violations were tyres that were ready to burst and failures to secure cargos with straps. One driver was caught using a manipulation device for the tachograph equipment and speed limitation device. The manipulation device was seized by Customs. The immobilised vehicles were all registered in the Baltic countries.

The control result was exceptionally poor. Normally around 10 - 20 percent of articulated vehicles are immobilised as a result of conducted controls.
