Finnish Customs compiles the statistics on the foreign trade of goods. One of the ways to confirm the correctness of the statistical information is to send the data providers an inquiry asking them to check the information they have provided. The procedure for sending these inquiries will be altered as of 29 August 2014.
Statistical inquiries concerning external trade (imports and exports)
The statistical inquiries concerning trade between Finland and third countries are currently sent to the data providers from the Electronic Service Centre mainly by e-mail. As of 29 August 2014 the statistical inquiries concerning customs declarations will be sent to the declarant or an agent of the declarant in the form of a letter printed by Itella Oyj.
Statistical inquiries concerning EU trade (arrivals and dispatches)
The statistical inquiries concerning trade between Finland and other member states of the European Union are currently sent to the data providers mainly by fax. As of 29 August 2014 the statistical inquiries concerning Intrastat declarations on EU trade will be sent to the company obliged to submit the declaration, or to an agent of that company, primarily by e-mail and secondarily in the form of a letter printed by Itella Oyj. However, the responsibility for the correctness of the information lies ultimately with the company obliged to submit the declaration.
Obligation to declare
According to sections 31, 32 and 33 of the Finnish Customs Act, a penalty fee can be imposed if a customs declaration or other submitted data is incomplete or incorrect or if the obligation to declare has been partly or completely neglected.
