Brexit and the invalidation of EORI numbers granted by the United Kingdom

Publication date 30.1.2019 7.56
Press release

EORI is an EU-wide system for the registration and identification of economic operators. Most customs declarations in the EU require that an EORI number be provided.

The details of the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU are not yet clear. However, Finnish Customs wants to remind businesses that if a “hard”, non-agreement Brexit is implemented and the UK becomes a third country, there will be significant changes in trade involving the UK. After Brexit, businesses are required to submit customs declarations for import and export with the UK, and to have EORI numbers.

In the event of a non-agreement Brexit, all EORI numbers granted in the United Kingdom will expire at midnight (Brussels time) on 29 March 2019. Businesses that have an EORI number granted by the UK will then have to apply for a new EORI number from an EU Member State.

Businesses that need a new EORI number can apply for one already in advance. Information on applying for an EORI number is available on the Customs website.
