Are you sending a gift abroad from Finland?

Items sent as gifts may be subject to restrictions or prohibitions in the country to which you are sending the gift. You can get more information about the restrictions and prohibitions e.g. from the authorities or the embassy of the country of destination. Finnish Customs does not have any information about the restrictions or prohibitions applied in other countries.

Please note that, in any event, there are certain goods that you are not allowed to send as gifts abroad from Finland. These include:

  • medicines classified as narcotics
  • firearms and ammunition
  • cultural objects.

For more information, please contact the transport company. Read more about the prohibited items and country-specific prohibitions and restrictions on Posti’s website.

Usually you do not have to submit an export declaration to Customs when you are sending a gift abroad. However, Posti or some transport company may need an export declaration submitted to Customs or the transport company’s own declarations. Please check this with Posti or some other transport company. You can submit an export declaration to Customs using the Export Declaration Service.

Are you sending a gift from abroad to Finland?

The gift recipient usually sees to the customs declaration of the gift. Please note that items received as gifts are subject to restrictions and prohibitions if the gift contains e.g. alcohol, tobacco products, foodstuffs of animal origin, plants or animals. Read what you can receive as a gift sent to Finland. Read more about the restrictions and prohibitions on goods in Finland.

The gift recipient may need a written account of the value and contents of the gift for the customs declaration. Therefore, you should keep e.g. the receipt or some other free-form account on the contents and value of the gift. If needed, send it to the gift recipient.
